Digital Camera Tutorial

How to take great photographs If you are heading out on a vacation, to keep your camera working and capture great photographs remember: 1). Have the countries’ outlet adapter 2). Have extra batteries, plus extra power availability and charge camera & battery…every night! 3). Bring a lens that is wide like 28mm-50mm if you’ll be close to mountains, monuments, colosseums, people, dinner tables or inside a boat. 4). Bring a telephoto lens if your near mountains, water, large animals, far away distance 5). Re-set the settings to start fresh and not have last night’s indoor settings when you are now outdoors. 6). Remember your flash has to go the distance of your telephoto. Otherwise the photo will be dark. So if your using the telephoto lens the flash may be of no use. 7). Use the histogram in your camera settings to balance the white. 8). Power is your best friend. Bring batteries in your case. 9). A small pin flash light may be needed at night to read the settings. 10.) Be on-guard and ready to shoot. The Importance of a good Lens

How to start a business in Photography I’ll try to include weekly specials at the top of the post so they are easier to find. BEST BUY WEEKLY SPECIALS CLICK HERE Buy the lens you really want separate from a bundle. You’ll have to buy that lens sometime. I had the most interesting portrait shoot Saturday. Interesting because I was the subject!!!  My daughter and I  were asked to be a part of a directory. We planned and picked out perfect outfits, had our hair done, rearranged our calender, and set up a time. This is a national company and you too have probably sat for them one time or another. We arrived  a few minutes early were pleasantly greeted, sat on the stool, couldn’t help but notice the dated equipment the photographer was shooting with, and politely asked him a few questions while he was arranging for our shoot. After a few equipment “glitches”, we were escorted to another room to view, choose and purchase our directory photograph. My daughter and I almost fell over with grief….we were shocked to see how terrible they were. We had made a pack with each other that we would somehow pick one just for the directory…no matter how bad!  We absolutely could NOT! We stared and tried to put behind us our imperfections but we both looked like we were 30-40 pounds FATTER! The lady stated “Oh this is exactly how you both look”! My daughter piped up and said “my mother does not look like that at all”!  Thank God!  I was really worried, and instantly depressed… I had made my mind up that I would eat blackberries for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the rest of my life! Moral to the story….YOU MUST PURCHASE CURRENT EQUIPMENT! The dated lens he was using was so old and the optics were useless. Useless, because I bet that he loses thousands of dollars a week in sales making people look 30-40 pounds heavier than they actually are. Shame on that company for cutting costs in the lens department. That is the most ridiculously stupid place to cut costs. The sure thing that makes you money. With the proper lenses you can sell twice the photographs. Have clients happy and proud of themselves when they leave, always leaving the door open for more reorders, not depressed and feeling fat and ugly. In an earlier post I stated that the optics are so important and this proves how much. later that evening my daughter grabbed her consumer camera, shot a quick candid picture of me and guess what I loved it! Why, because the lenses have become very high quality, even the consumer lenses. So, when...

Beginner DSLR Guide   1.2.2012 Basic Assumptions:   This is where you start when shooting a subject 1).    The power is fully charged 2).    The power on your camera is turned on 3.)    The flash and lens are attached with cords 4.)    The menu settings and custom features are cleared from your last shoot Cameras are precision instruments DO NOT LET THEM DROP It is imperative that you have your eye on your camera at all times, when in public. Young children, and teens love to change the buttons, and they do pick up equipment. The camera, flashes, camera cards, and lenses are not waterproof.  My suit jacket, a zip sealed plastic bag, and sweaters have all been used for protection several times.  Salty air exposure should be wiped off with a damp cloth. Never leave any equipment including a camera card exposed to dash boards or any kind of excessive heat. Strong magnetic fields (TV’s, speakers, magnets) can cause operation failure. Use a blower to remove dust on lenses, viewfinder, reflex mirror, & focusing screen Do not use organic cleaners/solvents they can...

How To Run A Photography Business

How do I Run a Photography Business? Let’s get right to the point Get everything in legal proper order. 1). County clerks office; pay under $50. for a “doing business as”; DBA form and fill out the name you want for your business. 2). Pay approximately $500. each year for 2 million dollars worth of liability insurance. If you are shooting for profit on a state road, local soccer field, construction site, or client’s home,  anywhere.YOU NEED THIS, and some companies will not hire you without it. This protects YOU. 3). Usually, I shoot everything clients asked me to shoot. From construction to babies. Take everything, including food photos. For that you’ll need to have your cameras set up differently. Table top shooting.  I’ll go through that guide in a following page. Take everything, but do not take one thing that is obscene, defamatory, or any illegal activity. 4). Aways collect the state tax. Save it in a seperate account. Go on line to your States tax web site. Like New York State.com/sales tax forms.  This is not hard. simply fill out the quartly forms and send a check. 5).  Display StateTax ID No./ Form as stated by the state. Consult an Accountant and Insurance agent. (Per requests I’ll have links for them too, coming up). 6). The joy is that you can build your studio at a later date, cutting start up cost.  I had my most success on different locations. 7).  How to chose a digital camera and making money with photographs is critical at this point. If you pick your own camera you may have huge problems later. I don’t want to tell you what to do, but really look at the Canon’s and Nikon’s I mentioned in post; How to make money as a Photographer . When you realize what you need that digital SLR camera body for, you may be disappointed later. Think about what you are focusing on, for how to make money as a photographer, that way you will have the interchangeable equipment set up that will work for your area of expertise. Send me a comment. The lens I’d like  to carry is the Canon 28-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS.  That is 28mm for large group shots, wider angle.  That way you can shoot a group and turn and grab, to the  135mm telephoto, a studio portrait style shot, and turn to the 80mm, ideal location  bust portrait /family small group lens. So there you have the best crystal clear low light settings, with three lengths in one lens. We want the best digital pictures. When you buy a set up…you will need another compete set up, if you are hired to complete the job you must do so even if you are having camera failure.  I...

How to start a Business In Photography

11.10.11 Welcome, The reason you are reading this free informative site is because you are an entrepreneur. You strive and are willing to take risks. You want to take better pictures,You are the future of photography!  You can change the way pictures are viewed and you can alter the styles and formats that once were the norm. I have experienced the change over and over for more than 25 years and now you can take this exciting passion into a whole new world in any direction you choose. Introduction   Since the film days I’ve been teaching people how to run a photography business, how to make money with photographs, where the best digital SLR guide is,  currently how to choose a digital camera, and how you can be world’s best in photography.  I have been photographing professionally for more than 29 years, and how to run a  photography business is my passion. I did not formally go to college for photography, but I did take a few technical portrait courses at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, mostly I learned through trial and error.  That was extremely difficult since there was no way to determine if you were successful with your camera adjustments, let alone your subjects, until the film was developed.  My college education consisted of a mixture of two degrees from three colleges, a combination of about 146 (not including the RIT classes) credits, none of which got me a completed four year degree, other than an associates, but I do have a great college education, consisting of business, statistics, biology, psychology, and fashion design/art illustration. I wanted to complete a degree, but I was making money shooting photos, working out of my home, making my own hours, and having alot of fun! One of my first part time classes was at the University of Colorado, Boulder Co., where I took a photography class, making money with a camera.  The professor told me I had a fantastic eye for photography.  That year I won first prize out of 400 contestants for the “lady walking her dog in San Francisco” (1973).  After that success I had hundreds of ideas for taking photos.  Later in 1974 I began teaching myself how to set up a photo studio. Remember to look for your personal style, use it, and alter it to fit the client too. It is never just all about you, you now have clients that are your bosses and they have a different vision.  The two visions must be combined. You are so blessed since digital came into our world. When I shot $100,000.00 weddings (I personally shot about 1500 weddings/events), corporate events and crucial business ventures that had only one chance, I had to “spiritually” shoot with film.  Do...
